DESIGNERS TO WATCH: Vyshyvankas by Vita Kin – Traditional Ukrainian Chic

“What I want to do is to lie on the beach on a sunny warm day and sell my creations through Instagram. My terms are 100% payment pre order, a 21-day wait for production, paid shipment, and 2 sizes to choose from. I don’t really care about anything else, I really don’t… I can’t even imagine having a factory or anything like that … I’d rather spend my time thinking of new designs.”

I like that attitude. Very Ukrainian. Vita rarely gives any interviews because she says she doesn’t need all the praise and promotion. She also states that she sees no reason in telling people about her daily routine and what she eats for breakfest.

Mrs. Vita, 44 years old, is the proof that one can be incredibly successful without any marketing or PR.

She quickly became the the rising star in the Fashion scene and her constantly sold out fashion line ‘Vyshyvanka by Vita Kin’ attracks fans like Fashion icon Ana Del Russo,Miroslava Duma and Man Repeller’s Leandra.

The embroideredd tunics and dresses that she calls Vyshyvankas  are simply stunning.

A Vyshyvanka is a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt that is usually made of linen. The region-specific patterns symbolize the connection between the generations and is passed from family to family. Vita says she is “..inspired by the fading traditions and techniques of various ancient cultures for making and decorating clothing. Embroidery, macramé and appliqué are my passion.”

Her designs that are full of bright geometric patterns and fringing are not seasonal designs but rather created by inspiration. Vita says she is “..inspired by the fading traditions and techniques of various ancient cultures for making and decorating clothing. Embroidery, macramé and appliqué are my passion.”

Vita’s modern approach to this priceless treasure reflects her passion for both style and her cultural heritage.

The ultimate preppy icon: C. Z. Guest

“Her hair, parted in the middle and paler than Dom Pérignon was but a shade darker than the dress she was wearing, a Mainbocher column of white crepe de chine. No jewellery, not much make-up; just blanc de blanc perfection… Who would have imagined that lurking inside this cool vanilla lady was a madcap, laughing tomboy?”

(Truman Capote, long-time friend)

Flip through the “inspiration” file that every designer keeps, and at some point you will find a picture of C.Z. Guest – showgirl (briefly), model (painted by Diego Rivera, Dali & Warhol), socialite, gardener, intimate of artists and writers. She had the perfect patrician looks.

Lucy Douglas Cochrane aka C. Z. Guest was born on 19th February 1920 and  grew  in Boston high society Boston.

I was wondering why she is more known and famous as C. Z. Guest. Quite a simple explanation:
CZ was her childhood nickname, coming from “sissy” from when her younger brother was unable to pronounce the word “sister”.

Of Course CZ went to Hollywood to become an actress but later married Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, a renowned polo champion in 1947 at Ernest Hemingway’s home in Cuba, him being her best man.

Her marriage  into a blue-blood heritage and old American money family put her in the spotlight  in American Society as well as fashionable international circles.

Residing at a 28-room estate on Long Island, New York, where C.Z.  quickly became well known as a socialite. She was infamous for her hospitality as a hostess of grand get-togethers among her frequent guests and BFFs that include Diana Vreeland, Babe Paley, Barbara Hutton, Oscar de la Renta, Joan Rivers, Cecil Beaton, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Salvador Dalí.

Almost like a riveting fiction novel (except that it is real), she lived her life to the fullest jetsetting around the world with friends.

Besides throwing extraordinary parties, C.Z. was also well known for her sense of fashion. She possessed a casual elegance that made everyone around her feel comfortable. Whether in the garden or in the ballroom, she exuded a carefree style that only a true fashion icon can have.

“I like the classic look. Keep it simple. There’s only so much you can wear.”

Her favourite brands were Mainbocher and Givenchy. In 1959 she was included in the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame.

Her style is timeless and is considered stylish in any decade.  She could turn a simple shift dress into the perfect look just by tying a scarf around her neck.

Diane von Furstenberg remembers:
“What made her even more special was her generosity of heart, her kindness, and her simplicity. Nothing about her was fake or phony. She was real class, real woman, real mother, real friend, real beauty. There will only be one C.Z. Guest… the real classy American Beauty.”

How do you feel about Saint Laurent’s decision?

Saint Laurent has excommunicated Colette! Can you imagine?!

And whole fuss is all about statement logo :

A parody Tee that Colette is selling:

Colette is THE cult store in Paris! The 8000 square feet concept store is full of an incredible selection of everything hip you can imagine – apparel, toys, magazines, books, jewelery and furniture.

Colette first opened its doors in March 1997. Aiming at re-inventing the concept of retail, the brand adopted the tag-line styledesignartfood to its space. The Colette world is one of consistent surprise, where hi-tech meets fashion, art and street-wear.

A mecca for everyone who is into fashion & lifestyle related and a must-do on the list when visting Paris.

Colette has previously sold other parody tees, like “Céline Dion” and “Homiés,” as well as those “Karl Who?” tees.

Well but this did not keep Hedi Slimane from severing ties with the store stating that selling counterfeit products seriously damage the YSL brand. On September 25, CEO Francesca Bellettini sent a letter to Sarah Andelmann, the creative director of the iconic store, confirming the end of their business relationship. Oouuch!

But not enough – Saint Laurent cancelled a Spring 2014 whole sale order worth $285,000 AND uninvited Sarah from the Saint Laurent Spring Fashion Show.

Furthermore Colette is not allowed to sell the latest issue of Document magazine which features a shot for Joe Goode by Hedi Slimane on the Cover!

A very theatrical show that reminds me of an urban funeral – Good bye LV!

Marc Jacobs is leaving Louis Vuitton after 16 years.

Even though Marc did not tell us why it is clear that he wants to concentrate on his own label Marc Jacobs. A source said that the designer aims to float his business – which is estimated to generate sales of around 500 million euros – in an initial public offering.

Anyhow, check this collection out!!!!              I   L   O  V  E     I T  !

It is radically different from previous collections but nevertheless reunites elements of previous shows.

The sheer embellished logo leggings are one of my favorite item of the collection.

00050h_592x888Along comes also a full selection of pale blue denim jeans embellished with black beads, which team extremely well with the beaded tops and jackets.

Jacobs vision for Summer 2014 includes beaded gowns and skirts and full legged pants .He teams it up with burlesque style tops and cropped tuxedos with black feathers.

All I can say: This is fashionlover’s heaven – monochrome black palette mixed with denim!

Good bye Marc!

Nicolas Ghesquiere, who left Balenciaga last year after having successfully revamped the Kering fashion brand, is seen as a frontrunner to replace Jacobs.

Stella Jean won Vogue Italia’s “Who’s On Next” talent contest in 2011 and her dresses sold out of Matches almost as soon as they landed for the last two seasons.

This year, Stella Jean was invited by Giorgio Armani to show her latest collection on his own stage in Milan.

I am absolutely in love with the fresh & funky looks. Compared to other shows, the purposedly mis-matched prints breath new life into fashion world. The collection is a truly chic tribute to her heritage. Born in Rome and of a Carribean descent, her designs are a mix of West African Origins and Italian couture craftsmanship.

It’s possibly the first time in the history of Milan Fashion Week that someone has been made such a proud ethical statement.

For the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, Stella has sourced colorful prints made by women living in villages in Burkina Faso and combines these with stripes and tartan fabrics. An unexpected but convincing marriage of European and African culture.

See below for Spring/Summer 2014 at Milan Fashion Week!!!

THE PRADA MARFA SHOP – The end of an era?

Before some of you do not even know about the PRADA MARFA SHOP  I want to feature it on my blog. The beautiful design object situated in Texas in the middle of nowhere may be closed down soon! Shame!

The Prada Marfa is not a real shop but an art object by Elmgreen and Dragset that was built in 2005. Initially it was meant to slowly melt back into the natural landscape. There were no intentions to repair or renovate it.

Unfortunately only 3 days after the sculpture was set up vandals started to gratify the outside, break into the shop and steal handbags and shoes…. But the object was repaired, repainted and restocked quickly. But this time the new Prada purses were hiding parts of a security system that alerts authorities as soon as bags are moved.

The Marfa Shop-sign might be familiar to you guys from Gossip Girl. Serena’s mother had the legendary logo on the wall at the family’s home entrance hall.

It has been a destination for people from all around the world that love fashion, art and architecture.

Beyonce Knowles during a road trip with friends…

A mecca for all fashion lovers!

If the beloved Prada building really has to close down this might be the end of an era. A very sad moment considering that after all these years and out of the blue the Texas Department of Transportation thinks that the Prada Logo is an illegal outdoor advertising sign. Ironically they say that it violates the 1965 Beautification Act.

ICONS: Carrie at Heart by T.S.

You know sometimes, you browse on the Internet looking for some trendy styles you can include in your wardrobe or the latest Vogue fashion and out of a sudden – very unexpected – you find an “oldie but goldie”.

You remember when you saw that dress, this look, or that certain something a while ago and then you see it again. You remember how this outfit first made you feel and that you actually never really gotten over THAT. One of those special outfits, which were hidden in your mind for quite some time and that very moment – when you see again THAT outfit – simply brightens your day with a fashionable smile on your face.

Something like that happened to me the other day – I had this fashionable déjà-vu that turned into a big smile when I found one of my favorite Carrie outfits:

First and now about the shoes (as we all know how much Carrie and we do love heels : ) sexy and classy at the same time. The Versace inspired dress and its print, simply to die for and should be hanging in my closet! The simple Tee calms down the dress print and gives this outfit the right kind of effortless attitude. The over-knee stockings I have never seen better paired honestly speaking and typing. The cardigan is wisely chosen for colder days. The leather clutch is a stylish deal breaker that one the one hand grasps again somehow the heel color and on the other hand makes the outfit complete. Lastly, the leather gloves – of course matching grey – are just too much to handle and simply beautiful.

This ensemble is one of the cherries within my outfit dreams, I have to admit.

And besides, the pose and flair simply reminded me that fashion is everywhere and even then & there when you least expect it! Thanx Miss lovely Carrie Bradshaw! xxx

Babette Clothing :Vintage inspired clothing mixed with modern aesthetics

“Fashion is a language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality.” – Karl Lagerfeld

There are these days… Middle of the week and you wish to just skip work and… instead on the menu should be, sipping champagne & smoking the casual Marlboro light with your best friend and what else for a perfect day?

The magic word is s-h-o-p-p-i-n-g but not just shopping rather vintage shopping.

“Just around the corner in every woman’s mind – is a lovely dress, a wonderful suit, or entire costume which will make an enchanting new creature of her.” – Wilhela Cushman

But where to head to find a lovely dress after a petite drink to become a new creature of my own? We are not in Paris (unfortunately!?) !! However, there is hope naming Babette Clothing in the heart of Cape Town

 Let me tell you why:

As soon as you enter Babette Clothing on Church Street you see and breath modern meets old-school but in a personalized blend. So this seems like the perfect lil vintage escape for a day like this sunny but chilly – thanks to authentic vintage memorabilia such as framed embroidery, vintage decor and all sorts of retro finds with thee vintage clothing pilled in-between.

After a warm welcome, Pietrie (the lovely store manager : ) will inspire you with the store’s vintage joy:

Barbara (the store owner) traveled the world after studying Fashion Design. That is how she discovered her love for vintage and how every piece had its own unique story. She found and returned with various vintage pieces since they seemed popular. And Babette began as a dream of hers.

In the beginning, Barbara re-worked the vintage dresses herself in a studio in Woodstock. She altered and branded the clothing to inhale a new stylish & modest layer. She started to trade at markets and festivals across the country such as the Labia or the City Bowl Market. The one-of-a-kind pieces were easily adored by fashionistas growing Barbette into the popular shopping destination for one-of-a-kind pieces in town.

In 2011, a year after its birth, the first store on Church Street was opened.

What makes Babette clothing a special vintage hot spot in the concrete city jungle of Cape Town?

Everything in the shop is vintage inspired mixed with a modern feel starting with the clothing and jewelry wrapping up with the lovely furnishing and interior décor. The past character of their own is still present, moreover, preserved but passionately remodeled and lives up to modern styles but never letting the uniqueness fade away.

What else you need to know:

New vintage pieces every week and you can even order from abroad!

In addition to vintage pieces, Barbette Clothing also stock vintage inspired new clothing and accessories, leather footwear, and locally designed jewelry and clothes.

The price range is from R50 bargains to R1200 leather designer bags. Vintage dresses go for around R350. And if this is not enough you always have hats, belts, necklaces, bracelets, etc… or just quick browse to (vintage) dream away.

Before leaving, Pietrie tells me that Barbara personally designed the interior of the store. It is truly believed that this is part of its success. Must have been since two years after the opening, another Babette will open its doors in Claremont at the beginning of October.

If you cannot get enough, go to the store on Church – 41 Church Street in case you forgot – or the Vintage Experience at Truth (every last Wednesday of the month ; )

Like them Facebook,, check the blog,, and spread the unique Vintage word.

P.S. I dreamed my vintage day away (don’t tell anyone ! ) and picked out already my new vintage dress in the online store at! What a perfect day away it was…

A rare glimpse of Carine: “Let the others have the beauty. I’ve got charisma.”

On September 11 a documentary about Carine Roitfeld comes out –  conveniently timed with New York Fashion Week, of course.

The film`s promotional poster was shot by Karl Lagerfeld, of course.

Mademoiselle C.

For those who do not know yet who I am talking about:

Carine Roitfeld ran French Vogue from 2001 to 2011 and is one of the fashion world’s most influential woman. Roitfeld has spent decades creating, agitating, and immortalizing fashion.

Inner circle of friends: Donatella Versace, Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld, Mario Testino, Riccardo Tisci, Diane von Furstenberg and Alexander Wang just to mention a few..

Carine Roitfeld was born in Paris and grew up with her French mother and Russian-emigré father, Jacques Roitfeld, a film producer. She later referred to her father as her “idol”,  and said he was “very chic, he loved to go out, he never came home.” Her mother was “more conventional”.

Carine became interested in fashion when she was 15 and started as a model back in 1975. “I wasn’t a star,” she later says. “I was just booked for junior magazines.”

She later became a  writer, muse and stylist. In 1991 she was hired to style  for Vogue.

“Mosaiques Orientales”, Elle France 1990, Helena Christensen styled by Carine

“Cocktail”, Vogue Paris 1994, photographed by Mario Testino & styled by Carine

“Tango des Passions”, Vogue Paris 2006, styled by Carine

Carine’s edgy look back in the 90ies had followers around the globe. All black-wearing fashion followers around the globe copied her look of spiky heels, pencil skirts, eyes smudged with black kohl, and poker-straight hair.

carine-roitfeld-acne-joseph-collection-2Carine-inspired Lookbook for London-based retailer Joseph‘s private label in 2009.

For more picture of Carine’s world this page is amazing:

Mademoiselle C.” is about Carine’s world full of models, celebrities, and eccentric personalities. We will be watching her moving to New York, starting a new business and getting prepared to become a grandmother.  A reality show of a glamorous fashion star and her fabulous life…..

”Grimm Mystique” – Hensel and Gretel by Valentino

Mainly Hensel and Gretel are the inspiration for the delightful Fall Winter collection by Red Valentino.

Fairy tales and folklore elements are transferred into a very stylish and wearable collection that takes you into another world. The looks are very unique – breathtaking designs and eye catching cuts, amazing floral prints and luxurious fabrics reflect an Alice in Wonderland look alike allure.

I feel like a little girl again … reading Grimm’s fairy tales…. I can almost feel the darkness and the cold of a wicked forest. … and I do look très chic in my designer robe ….

Before gorgeous Kate hits the shelves – Check it out here!

Shot by Craig Davids and styled by Katy England.

Last time Kate Moss appeared on a Men’s magazine cover was back in 1996! 17 years later, at the age of 39 she agreed to do  Esquire cover for September issue. She looks fantastic in this sheer body cleverly placed with jewel embellishments.

And this is only a warm-up. There will be a Playboy Cover in January 2014!

The Bling Ring – A twisted adventure: An obsession with celebrities and their wardrobe that turned into organized crime

Spohia Coppola’s new movie is based on a true story of a group of teenagers  who burglarized the homes of several celebrities between October 2008 through August 2009.

The Bling Ring also called the “Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch“, “The Burglar Bunch“, or the “Hollywood Hills Burglars

All newcomers – Claire Julien, Georgia Rock, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga and Emma Watson!

About $3 million in cash and belongings.

Rachel Lee

Lee had a privileged upbringing. ´She was named “Best Dressed” in the 2007 school’s yearbook. Lee was obsessed with reality television.

Nick Prugo

Nicholas Frank Prugowas reported to be a shy and friendless teen suffering ADHD and Anxiety. Lee and Prugo became friends because the both share a passion for fashion. During the first burglary, they discovered $8000 in cash hidden under a bed. They split the money, and the next day went shopping on famous Rodeo Drive.

Alexis Neiers

Joined the circle when she was kicked out of her home because her mother found her smoking OxyContin. The first burglary she unknowingly accompanied the other she was totally drunk. It was Orlando Blooms house.

Diana Tamayo

Diana Tamayo was once in school she had been voted “best smile”, and been awarded a $1,500 “Future Teacher” scholarship after graduation. Her small size was perfect for accessing homes by crawling through the dog door.

Courtney Ames

Courtney Ames, whose stepfather is famous boxer Randy Shields, was a Calabasas High School student and an “old friend” of Lee’s.It was through Ames that the others met Lopez and Ajar, her boyfriend.

Johnny Ajar

A former convict who was recruited to sell stolen items for cash.

Roy Lopez, Jr.

Also recruited as a reseller, and he also  alleged to have stolen $2 million in jewelry in Paris house but he was unable to sell most of it.

Mainly fashion icons – in the words of Prugo, “mainly because (of) women wanting women’s stuff”.

Paris Hilton

They chose Paris Hilton because they thought she was “dumb” and would leave doors unlocked. On their first burglary adeventure Prugo and Lee went alone and discovered that the door was unlocked AND discovery the key under the doorbell.

The gang broke into Paris house at least five times. Only when Lopez stole 2 Million $ in jewelry Paris Hilton reported having been burglarized.

They even snorted cocaine in her house and claim that they found it inside the residence.

Audrina Patridge

Same at Audrina house – unlocked door made it easy for the gang to get in and steal jewelry, her passport, a laptop and a custom-fit jeans. All in all for 43.000 $!  Lee and Prugo were filmed on surveillance videos which Audrina uploaded to her webpage. But this did not prevent the gang from continuing their burglaries.

You can see the video here:

Rachel Bilson

Her home was burglarized six times within 2 months. amounting to between $130,000 and $300,000 of stolen property.

The Bilson burglaries yielded so much in the way of clothes and accessories that members tried to relieve themselves of some of it by selling it at the Venice Beach boardwalk.

While Paris offered her house for filming Rachel is not  the biggest fan of Sofia Coppola’s latest work.

Says Bilson, ”I thought it was weird to glorify something that was so upsetting for a lot of people. It’s important to detach from material things, but the special, personal things I lost are hard to forget.”

Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr

The desired target was Miranda’s lingerie. Remember – she is a Victoria’s Secret Angel!

Prugo, Neiers, Lee and Tamayo got in by cutting through a security fence. The gang stole a large amount of high fashion-label clothing, LV luggage, artworks and Bloom´s Rolex collection – all worth nearly half a million dollars.

Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox

Again the target was the girlfriend’s clothes. But besides Megan’s wardrobe the gang also took Brian’s SIG Sauer 380 Automatic handgun.

Lindsay Lohan

Since Lindsay was Lee`s ulitmate fashion icon she got really excited about this conquest. Lee, Prugo and Tamayo stole around 130.000 $ worth of clothing and jewelry. The really freaky out over Lohan´s stuff and did not even mind they could be captured again by cameras and end up in prison.

Parlez-moi d’amour Mr. Galliano: “I dare women to dream”

What separates the good designers from the great designers?

Parlez-moi d’amour – Tell me about love – is one perfume by John Galliano – British fashion and costume designer.

John Galliano Returns to Fashion at Oscar de la Renta

At the moment, John Galliano does not talk much about love and fashion profusion but rather apologies and atonement for his sin – anti-Semitic remarks that were published in February 2011. Soon afterwards, his public dismissal from his the house of Dior and even his own house of Galliano were announced leading to his way to dishonor and silence – banned from the world of fashion.

Ever since his name has a depraved a connotation, which stands in contrast to the critical acclaim to the creative and talented genius he is known to the fashion world: creating volumes and shapes – fashion dreams – at Givenchy and eventually Dior.

After two years of silence, it seems that John Galliano has risen from the abundant back into the world of attention and affection. So far, media presented several articles and even a one-hour interview with Charlie Rose:

In this open talk, Galliano reveals his thoughts and feelings that he closely guarded for a long time. How remarkably alone and unsupported he sometimes felt, traveling the world at fashion’s top. There’s a massive pressure to do what you have to do and nobody takes care of you mentally.

Vanity Fair will also tribute a big coverage to enfant terrible this July. Until then remain some memories since the incident in 2011 such as one of dearest friend´s wedding, Kate Moss.

Kate Moss by Mario Testino (Kiss Me Kate - Vogue US September 2011) 8

A few weeks into his recovery, Kate Moss stood by him, contacted him and asked him to design her wedding dress, something they had discussed when he was still at Dior. Galliano felt it was a gift: “Creating Kate’s wedding dress saved me personally because it was my creative rehab. She dared me to be me again.

John Galliano and Kate Moss know each other since 1989 – Kate Moss was 14 years. Moss says, “He’s been talking to me like that since I was 14 years old: ‘You’re a wild child, and you’re following the boys on the motorbikes. On my wedding day, I’m like freaking out, obviously.”

Just before she sets off the runway for her wedding, Kate requests “a few words, a story to inspire her. She loves a bit of direction!” says Galliano. “I told her, ‘You have a secret-you are the last of the English roses-and when he lifts your veil he’s going to see your wanton past!’”

In 1989, Kate Moss walked to audition with John Galliano: “… I’d found my little rough diamond. She was just amazing – put the dress on, immediately understood what she was wearing, the line, the walk. It was her frock. There was that magic, an enigma, there in front of us. The hair! She had gorgeous long hair. She was a real beauty…”

She can tell couturiers about the line – what one should be doing, what will and won’t work. And we listen! She is the only real muse I’ve ever had. Actually creative, creating with me.”

Years back, Galliano and Moss would go to Quiet Storm, a nightclub in London. Moss was a fearless 15-year-old, loosely supervised wearing “prostitute shoes and crotch minis and not much else. I’d wear these knee-high leather boots and this tiny little Galliano dress, because obviously it was the only designer thing I had.”

Scandal also struck Moss in September 2005, when London’s Daily Mirror ran the story with the headline ‘Cocaine Kate’ and photographs of Moss allegedly cutting cocaine. She lost lucrative contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel as a result of the scandal, but disgrace predicted by many never happened.

Johny G also went to rehab just as Kate after the scandal. In comparison to his beloved friend and muse, Galliano remains still banished from the world of fashion, even with his moment of insanity two years ago and public apologies.

Let us hope and wish one of fashion’s greatest influences to perform again his craftsmanship – signature draping, working with & praising fabrics in the near future.

Legendary Couples: Johnny Depp & Winona Ryder

It was love at first sight when they met at the “Great Balls of Fire” Premiere in New York in 1989.

They got engaged five months later and one month later they were living together.

They broke up in 1993 because Winona’s father said “at 19, Winona is too young to marry.”

A true love couple and why they should have never broken up…

Winona Ryder: ‘When I met Johnny, I was pure virgin. He changed that. He was my first everything. My first real kiss. My first real boyfriend. My first fiancé. The first guy I had sex with. So he’ll always be in my heart. Forever. Kind of funny that word.’

 b&w johnny and winona

Johnny Depp: ‘I’d die for her. I love her so much. I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s going through a lot right now. I wish I could just kiss away the pain, make it go away, stop it, kill it! If she, you know, I don’t know what I would do. I’d kill myself. I love that girl. I love her. I love her almost more than I love myself.’

A ‘Winona Forever’ double-banner tattoo was engraved into his right bicep to match the tribute to his mother on his left.

When Winona got arrested for shoplifting in 2001,  Johnny sent her a dozen pink roses and wrote a note himself stating, ‘Don’t worry hon, it happens to the best of us. Good luck in court! I got faith in you!’

“Too much good taste can be boring”

High Priest of Fashion Diana Vreeland – One of the none perfect individuals
transforming into society lady and style icon.

“Knit yourself a little skullcap. Turn your old ermine coat into a bathrobe… ‘Wash your
blond child’s hair in dead champagne, as they do in France.”
When I think about Vogue editors in chief – Carine Roitfeld (previously at French
Vogue), Anna Wintour (American Vogue), Christiane Arp (German Vogue) or Liz
Tilbertis (former British Vogue) come immediately to my mind. All different styles,
attitudes & approaches and overall remarkable editors. But who left the strongest
footprint in my mind and shaped Vogue as we know it today still is Diana Vreeland –
High Priest of Fashion what she is usually referred to.

“Elegance is innate. It has nothing to do with being well dressed. Elegance is
“Fashion is part of the daily air and it changes all the time, with all the events. You
can even see the approaching of a revolution in clothes. You can see and feel
everything in clothes.”

What I admire about Diana Vreeland was her effortless always-chic style that made
her look classy and contemporary for her time but never out of time. Moreover, she
was well aware that she was not as sexy as other starlets of her time but managed to
be widely attractive though. Even her mother telling her that she is extremely ugly
and calling her a little monster did not stop her from becoming one of the greatest
style icons of our times.
“You don’t have to be born beautiful to be wildly attractive.”
“Style—all who have it share one thing: originality.”

Her flamboyant outfits – usually black from head to toe – paired with her jet-black hair
and perfectly red nails were as stuck with her legendary grace as her notorious

“When I arrived in America, I had these very dark red nails which some people
objected to, but then some people object to absolutely everything.”
“I can’t imagine becoming bored with red — it would be like becoming bored with the
person you love.”

Diana Vreeland saw beauty where most of us would shy away from and only allow
ourselves to dream about. Her intuitive but always innovative sense what the mass
might like and can handle set her apart from many editors. Although she was none of
the crowd, she related to them by giving them faith and confidence to think about the
unattainable and to transform it into a seemingly banal reality.

“What do I think about the way most people dress? Most people are not something
one thinks about.”
“You gotta have style. It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the
morning. It’s a way of life. Without it, you’re nobody. I’m not talking about lots of
Her self-preservation and determination transformed her vulnerabilities, insecurities
and failures in an early life into her break-through and divine success.

Her visions became real not just through her work for Vogue and Harper’s Bazar
from the 40s (1936) until 80s (1971) but also in her way of life as recently once more
documented in “The Eye has to Travel”, published by the end of 2012 (September

Another book would have simply been not enough to portray the drama, the
imagination and the innate character of Diana Vreeland.
“…Don’t think you were born too late. Everyone has that illusion. But you aren’t. The only problem is if you think too late.”
“There’s only one thing in life, and that’s the continual renewal of inspiration.”

The movie intends to tell her personal story behind the dazzling, adventurous woman
that worked her way up into the glamorous world of fashion and society.
Movie locations include Paris at the turn of the 19th century, New York City in the
roaring 20s and London in the swining 60s.
Besides her personal story, the film also incorporates defining moments in the history
of fashion while also embracing women in roles of power and stardom.
I cannot wait to inhale the interviews, photography, graphics and visuals coupled with
insights and anecdotes from colleagues and friends like Andy Warhol or Manolo
Blahnik that melt into a living work of art.

Although I have not watched the movie yet, I am sure it will be filled with style,
elegance and grace, and simply reveal her genius mind-set undermined with her
smoky voice – that blend of polished sophistication and street jargon about…
… designer personalities?
“Balenciaga often said that women did not have to be perfect or beautiful to wear his
clothes. When they wore his clothes, they became beautiful.”
“Where Chanel came from in France is anyone’s guess. She said one thing one day
and another thing the next. She was a peasant—and a genius. Peasants and geniuses are the only people who count and she was both.”
… fashion and dressing?
“The bikini is the most important thing since the atom bomb.”
“Fashion must be the most intoxicating release from the banality of the world.”
… and last but not least a very good life for your own:
“There’s only one very good life and that’s the life you know you want and you make
it yourself.”

Forget about Manolo Blahnik – Carrie Bradshaw would have loved Sophia’s unique, fresh, colorful and quirky Stilettos!

Decorated with sunset prints, palm tree silhouettes, graphic check trims and bright colors –  no wonder  these shoes are creating a buzz in the fashion world. Up-and-coming shoe designer Sophia studied at the Royal College of Art and Cordwainers and won a London College of Fashion award of excellence (2008) and the Browns shoe designer award (2010) while still studying. So things looked promising from the beginning.

“I’m really pleased and so flattered that this level of retailers and buyers are supportive and they got it,” she said of her collection “It’s going really fast, but I’m enjoying every minute.

Check out her beautiful website! It is definitely worth it!

En VOGUE: Why do we love Olivia Palermo?

American socialite, model and actress. Probably most stylish woman in New York.

Olivia of course grew up at the Upper East Side and made her way to New York social scene by attending more and more events.

It is rumoured she wrote a letter to fellow socialites asking for acceptance in their inner circle.

However she has a great taste and above all a talent to creatively combine classic ladylike styling with a few unexpected accessories.

She is never to disappoint whenever she hits the street.

I have never seen Olivia Palermo in an outfit I didn’t love — or want to re-create.

From Reality Star ( The City – a spin of MTV’s The Hills) to Fashion Icon.

Perfect boyfriend – Johannes Huebl (model, of course). Here together for a Mango campagin.

In case you get obsessed with her as I do you can check out :

It’s been raining for days and I had a lot of time researching latest trends. These colors and prints jumped into my eyes and made me wanna go shopping some key pieces to brighten up my monotone (winter) wardrobe! I hope the sun comes out soon – because I will then head straight to my favorite high street clothing stores for a fashion treat!

Kenzo – Animal & Tropical Heat

Cedric Charlier – Brush Patterns

Tsumori Chisato – Painted Expressions

Hermes – Tropical Palms & Mosaic Prints

Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain met on January 12, 1990, in Portland’s Satyricon nightclub, Cobain said: “I was determined to be a bachelor for a few months […] But I knew that I liked Courtney so much right away that it was a really hard struggle to stay away from her for so many months.”

From 1991 the two were often together and bonded through drug use.

Around the time of Nirvana’s 1992 performance on Saturday Night Live, Love discovered that she was pregnant with Cobain’s child. On February 24, 1992 the couple was married on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Courtney wore a satin and lace dress once owned by the actress Frances Farmer, and Kurt wore green pajamas, because he had been “too lazy to put on a tux”.

BUT (!!!) ….Malick is mostly noted for his black and white studies of pop culture in the 1960s and 70s in Bamako, the capital city of his home country Mali.

His photgraphs offer a fascinating look at the people and the time, particularly how Western influences in fashion migrate through other cultures over time. I really like the certain innocence in these images and of the course the fashionably funky clothes

While the men shift from close-cropped hair and suits with straight-legged slacks to Afros, flared slacks and wide ties, the women generally seem to be more conservative in adopting Western styles.

TREND: Bling Bling from SOHO

We all know that statement jewellery is still hot for now. But this is the next level!

Funky Bling is a hot jewellery brand from Soho, London – a fresh concept with a collection of pieces that range from bold cuffs, high contrast neon pieces, bling bling Swarovski crystal accessories to slogan beanies for all the trashy party princesses.

Its fun, its handfinished and it is so  glamourously trashy !

En Vogue: Supermodel Cara Delevingne at Cannes Film Festival

She did it all right! There is no need to blog about other outfits since Cara stepped out at Cannes and took everybody’s breath away! Dressed in a black Burberry gown and dripping in diamonds she looks so supremely glamorous. In combination with her lipstick and the smokey eyes she left an unbelievable impact beyond the Cote D’Azur into the world.

I love that classic Hollywood hairstyle and will copy this sexy side trick whenever possible. Girls, get a red lipstick and brush your sleek waves to one side! Promise – you will look fabulous in any outfit!

Or was it all just an elaborate plan to show the world her new lion finger tattoo? Her red manicure certainly helped.

YEAH ! 90ies are back: Doc Martens

These shoes are ones you just can’t leave out of fashion for too long! Doc Martens are back in style, and from the looks of things, it’s only going to get bigger. The iconic ’90s shoe — everyone had a pair ( I actually had 5 pairs 🙂 )— has resurfaced with new styles and designer collaborations.

Whether worn with skinny jeans, shorts or a dress , these boots will upgrade the cool factor of any outfit.

Dr Martens were invented by a German army doctor who injured his ankle but found the regular army boots too uncomfortable for his sore ankle so he found some leather and designed a shoe (that’s the short version). I bet he had no idea that these would become an ultimate fashion statement…

Of course at our favorite web shop !

There is a collector in South Africa who apparently does sell Dr Martens. You have to check his Facebook Page! Its incredible!

Need some inspiration on how to pull them off? Look no further than Jessica Alba,Gwen Stefani and other Fashionistas…

If your budget is too small – I have very good news!

On you can buy wonderful Doc Martens inspired Lace-Up Boots for only 369 ZAR!!

Channel Monochromatic Light Frames

Living your best life and looking at means to cleanse the fashion soul. As a modern girl (boys you too), striving towards being cool, calm and collected will be easy this season with monochromatic themes in your wardrobe. Try to have continuity with your clothing pieces by putting together single looks with all black items, white or a combination of the two forces.  While you are living your modern girl/boy life, try and pair your outfits with a more minimal approach to your accessories by using transparent Perspex as appose to your colourful or enamel based pieces.

DO’s and DONT’s: MBNY

This is definitely my favorite outfit – no matter what other people might say! This burgundy one-piece from Stella McCartney is so refreshing different from all the other fancy dresses! To die for!

The new star at the fashion sky Cara Delevigne can´t do any wrong. Look at this Burberry dress! The studs, the smokey eyes and the hair do create a look that definitely meets the evening’s theme ‘Punk:Chaos to Couture’

Sienna Miller is one of my style icons and I simply love the mix of punk elements and the romantic Burberry dress.

What was Nicole thinking? Even if the TopShop dress is amazing this whole styling is weird. The only person who can show up with white hair is Karl!

Obviously Rihanna loved it. She tweeted a photo of her friend Nicole Richie all dressed up for the Met Ball, adding emphatically ‘B***h makes me throw up!’

Did Givenchy actually approve Madonna’s outfit? No,  it  is HORRIBLE!

Money can’t buy taste! That’s all I have to say! I wonder whether   this fabric looks better on a couch or on Kim. At least Kanye should have told her the truth…

Beyoncé Knowles in (another horrible) Givenchy outfit! OMG this is so ugly that it reminds me of her old outfits that her mum used to design for Destiny’s Child! We all know Queen B. can do way better…

Ashley Olsen wearing Vintage Dior. Not sure if I should love it or hate it.

What a beautiful headpiece! The best thing about Sarah is that she embraces the style of her alter ego Carrie!

Dree Hemingway did take the whole risk – forgetting all about feminity wearing a black silk twill long sleeved dress from Stella McCartney and a leather metalhead jacket.

Anja Rubik in a Anthony Vaccarello red leather mini radiates 80ies Punk Deluxe

Kate Bosworth in Balmain! Not a punk couture chaos but a fashion cookie!

Last but not least some Eye-Candies:

Devine interaction between Cara and Sienna.

But the cherry of the iceberg was the fiancée of Pharrel Williams – Helen Lasichanh. She started to stumble over her own feet during leaving the MET Party and there was her bubbies on a silver paparazzi plate. Can there be more attention is what I am thinking? Pharell doesn’t mind…

RETRO: Let’s get you Gatsby’d up!

The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books and I read it many times. I am obsessed with the 20ies and its decadent lifestyle. So I can’t wait that the remake hits South African movie screens. Since the older version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow is an awesome movie I am quite curious what  Baz Luhrman’s adaption will be like. Apart from Leonardo DiCaprio playing Gatsby and Carey Mulligan playing Daisy there are a few more reasons why this is a must-see this upcoming winter.

Never seen a man looking better in a pink dapper suit than Robert Redford!

Mia Farrow wearing a green sequined evening dress, matching fringed headpiece and feathered fan.

Carey looking stunning in Vogue photo shoot with a blue Miu Miu dress with embroidered Swarvoski elements.

A scence from the movie – a little foretaste of what we can expect…

Designed by Luhrmann’s wife in collaboration with fashion designer Muiccia Prada, the costumes are so beautiful that 20 film looks are on display in the Prada store in New York now!

Catherine Martine, the designer, said: “’We didn’t want a nostalgic 1920s. We wanted a modern 1920s,’ she explained. ‘So there had to be a sensibility about history, but there also had to be an actuality about it.’

Prada display of costumes

Prada sketches

Of course the industry did not wait long to supply us with the style of the Roaring Twenties. The oldest men’s fashion clothing chain in the US Brooks Brother has teamed up with the designers and came up with a clothing line inspired by the Gatsby style. Check it out – it is so fresh and elegant!

So what are the key items for the Flapper Girl look?

The easiest way to pay homage to the decade is the humble headband ( even though back then its was less humble – think feathers and flowers and sparkle).  Also the cloche hat was the key item in the 20ies. It makes an outfit look very elegant and sophisticated. Pretty sure you can find a quick fix at and Accessorize, TopShop, Mr.Price, Woolworths..)

As seen on the latest catwalk shows the dropped waist is coming back and definitely is the typical cut of the Flapper Girl wardrobe – it makes a long, lean and boyish silhouettes moving away from the old fashioned and very uncomfortable corsets of decades past.

Don’t forget to layer as many pearls as possible to get into the mood!

AND above all it is about the razzle, dazzle and all that jazz of the decade. In fashion terms, this meant one thing: sequins, beads and embellishment galore.

Got and get a sparkling Flapper Dress! Combine it with a headband, pearls and Mary Janes. Call your Mr. Gatsby and get all decadent – there is always a party to attend!

…more inspirations for a wardrobe update…

It seems as the though the biker jacket is making the rounds again this winter. So keep yourself covered up with this essential piece. suit it up by opting for it rather than the usual blazer or dress it down with the casual look of denim jeans + a plain tee. its one of the items that you can mix it up with and goes with many different occassions. so hit the streets. look hella fresh. and get this statement piece. here are some trendy boys that show us how its done.

Model Reading Folio in Orange Top and Skirt

“Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.”
Fashion photographer, costume designer, illustrator and writer Cecil Beaton was not born into an aristocratic family but certainly made up for it during his carrier, not just for his work for the British Royal Family but also for Vogue and Vanity Fair during the 30s, 40s and 50s. He took sublime photos of Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo and other Hollywood beauties and even our beloved Coco Chanel! Yay that! Just imagine being his assistant on a shooting with Mrs. Hepburn or Mrs. Monroe. I would have adored to be his little maniac assistant so I could have meet some of these icons and go to fashionable New York Society parties. His legacy never faded and he influenced fashion photography as it is today – true to oneself as elegant and gracefully as Mrs. Hepburn.

EYECANDY: Angelina Jolie posing topless with horse

Wonder why I hadn´t seen those pictures before…DID YOU?

By the time the pics were taken by David La Chapelle Angelina was 25years old – young, wild and reckless! But those days are over for good….The actress transformed from bad girl to mother of 6 kids and stole Brad from Jennifer! Not that bad either….

The photographs will be sold at “Christie’s” on London. However, the lucky one will at least have to pay 400000 ZAR!

This is just simply beautiful! I love the mixture of patterns and prints, animals and walking beauties.

This is the official video promoting Kenzo’s Restort 2013 collection. Illustrator Mat Maitland has created an eyecatching and vibrant film that impresses with its swirling patterns and brightly colored animal prints that fill up the catwalk screen and reflect on models clothes and faces. Amazing graphics that emerge us into a magical electric jungle.

Obsession of the Month – Prada Minimal Baroque Shades

prada baroque sunglasses 3

Do you know that feeling when you just browsing through the Internet and then you find something that you absolutely MUST HAVE. When I saw this picture of Julia Sarr-Jamois, the fashion editor of Wonderland Magazine, I immediately fell in love with the Prada Minimal Baroque Shades.
I just love, love, love the artwork as part of these pair of shades that makes them so interesting and unique. And after all, who can say NO to Prada!? I can’t. So after some time of secret admiration and looking for them everywhere in Cape Town, I finally found a similar (MY : ) pair at MELANGE on Kloof Street. The staff such as Brett are really sweet and made MY pair even more special.
So the time of secret admiration is over and Prada inspired times are on the menu for a fashionable winter season!

SHOPS: Joy’s Collectable “Treasures” on Long Street Cape Town

Some of my friends have asked me where I get my vintage pieces from? The answer is quite simple and usually always the same: Joy’s Collectable at The Long Street Antique Arcade on Long Street in Cape Town.

I usually come and browse every other week for hidden treasures (mostly vintage pearls and cute little purses : ) and always find all kinds of amazing things in addition. Well, my banking account is not much in favor of my spending habits but mostly I just cannot resist and have to add a little vintage piece now and then.

Not just the lovely Joy but all her collectables make this one of my vintage hot spots in Cape Town.

EYECANDY: Chloe posing in her bathtub

We all know that Chloe is different – so is her bathroom! . ..

AND she bares it all in the shot for the book “The world according to wonder” by Fenton Bailley and Randy Barbato.

They are known for their Hollywood based production company World of wonder that made the awesome movie “Party monster” as well as TV programs and documentaries like “Million Dollar Listing”, “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, “The Fabulous Beekman Boys”, “Party Monster”, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, “Inside Deep Throat”, “Monica in Black and White”, “Tori and Dean” and “Becoming Chaz”. The book has been released recently and is a concentrate of perverse creativity celebrating the marginalism, embodies pop suggestions, anecdotes, 290 unseen portraits principally shot by photographers Idris Rheubottom and Tony Craig and filled with pop culture anecdotes.

Juergen Teller Personal

I am very proud that Jürgen is German! I love love love his work – especially because he is one of the few photographers who does not “retouch” his photographs and who massively changed the way we view fashion photography  – combining humor, self-mockery and emotionally honesty. He managed quite successfully to be highly recognized in fashion and art scene.

You should see this tumblr dedicated to Jürgen´s work:

Street Style: New York – Details make the difference!

You might disagree but I am in LOVE with this color and detail mix of this young New Yorkaise lady – Yes, lady and not girl. The platinum blond hair reminds me of my good old Blondie days. God I miss them, my hair not. The black and red make up in contrast to the bright orange tweet blazer with a royal blue collar is edgy and timeless at the same time. But the ultimate clue of this outfit are the shining green nails that can be found as well in the earrings. Well, don’t forget the silver nail color! Ok, I hush and go on loving every detail of this style…
